Who was Heraclitus of Ephesus?

Heraclitus of Ephesus lived between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, in a Greek city that today is just a ruin on the coast of Türkiye. He refused political positions because he thought his fellow citizens were not wise enough to deserve his participation, and he became known, even in Antiquity, as "The Obscure".

Why "The Dark"

Heraclitus purposely wrote in a difficult way. Not because of a lack of clarity, but because he believed that true knowledge required effort, that depth could not be served on a flat plate. He did not leave us a complete work, only around 130 fragments, fragments of a thought preserved in quotations from other philosophers, such as Plato, Aristotle and Diogenes Laertius. It's a beautiful irony: a philosopher of change who came to us in pieces.

Fire as a principle

Before him, Thales said that the beginning of everything was water, and Anaximenes said it was air. Heraclitus disagreed with both: for him, it is fire. And the reason is precise: fire is the only "thing" that only exists as it consumes and transforms. He has no change, he is change.

Everything flows, but in order

Heraclitus did not stop at this material principle. He went further, with the concept of Logos, the universal reason, the hidden logic that governs the flow of everything. Change, for him, is not chaos, it has an order, a tension, a rhythm, like the bow and the lyre, instruments that only work through tension between opposing forces. This is the world of Heraclitus, alive, tense, in eternal movement, but in no way random. This principle is the heart of what became known as Panta Rhei, everything flows.
